Mother's Day is celebrated in many countries and it is a day used by children to honor mothers and grandmothers. In the U.S. Mother's Day was begun in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe and is always celebrated on the second Sunday in May.

In Mexico Mother's Day is always celebrated on May 10 and is one of the country's most important holidays. It is celebrated in a big way: moms are serenaded, offered flowers and gifts and are usually treated to a nice meal. It is often celebrated with a mass at the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe, where an orchestra plays "Las Mananitas" (the Mexican birthday song) to the Virgin. The Virgin in Mexico is symbolical of motherhood. The "mother figure" plays a central role in Mexican society. According to a custom in Mexico, sons and daughters come to the Family Home on the eve of Mothers Day on May 9. Even grown children are expected to spend the evening before Mother’s Day with their Moms.
