Last weekend I drove up to the Mixe region of the state of Oaxaca where the Covenant has two churches. One church is in the town of Mixistlan de la Reforma and the other church is in the town of Santa Maria Mixistlan. I visited the church in Santa Maria Mixistlan. It is the largest Covenant church in all of Mexico with about 200 members--amazing since the town has only about 1400 inhabitants. It was a rather cool and rainy day as we left the city of Oaxaca and by the time we arrived in Santa Maria Mixistlan, it was cold and pouring. The town is 7,000 feet above sea level and the weather reminded me of a cold drizzly day in October in Chicago.
When we arrived we were treated to a typical breakfast of beans, rice and quesillo (kind of like string cheese) and HOT coffee. Later in the day we had a chicken stew and we ended the day with the special tamales that this town makes. The ladies worked all afternoon making huge quantities of the tamales. In this photo you can see one of the giant green leaves that the ladies use to wrap around the tamales. It is from the same plant family as a banana tree.One thing that makes this town unique is that instead of Spanish, the everyday language is Mixe. Indeed the older women and tiny children do not even understand Spanish.
The evening church service was half in Spanish and half in Mixe but it was unmistakable that all were praising God. If you would like to listen to Pastor Leonardo addressing the congregation in Mixe, please go to:
