This past week I was with a mission trip that went to the isthmus region of Oaxaca. The week started out with a trip to the local market to buy food to put in food baskets for families in a former garbage dump area of Oaxaca. The group broke up into teams and had to manage their way through the market to purchase the items. Some of the items were easy to find and with other items, group members had to think out of their comfort zone.

Once the items for the food baskets were purchased, we drove to the community where we passed out the food to three families. We were also given a tour of the community and a community center where literacy classes and classes in English are given each week.

A view of the Vicente Guerrero community from high atop a hill. People from the mountains come down into the Oaxaca valley to try to better their lives. They build houses from whatever material can be found.

While in the isthmus we worked with the Semillas de Salud (Seeds of Health) group to do school screenings in a small town. Doctora Elidia, Abisai and Carmelo share a rare moment of rest. They are Oaxacans who coordinate the Semillas de Salud ministry.

We set up several stations for the health screenings: height and weight, vision testing, anemia screening, etc.

We took time one afternoon to visit the beach in Salina Cruz--about 20 minutes from the school health screening project.

We also enjoyed home made Oaxacan ice cream with flavor selections such as burnt milk, prickly pear cactus, guayaba, and lemon.

The burnt milk ice cream sounds interesting. Is it at all like a caramel flavor? I'd love to try it.
