Santa Maria Papalo

At the end of this past summer I was able to accompany friends who are Wycliffe missionaries to the village where they are helping translate the Bible into Cuicatec, the indigenous language of the people in that area.
We went to the village of Santa Maria Papalo.  It was about a six hour drive from the city of Oaxaca, the last three of which were on an unpaved road.  This photo is the "road sign" to the village--another 30 minutes away.

Santa Maria Papalo is about 7,000 feet up in the mountains.  This is the view right before entering the town.  Everyday we could see the clouds coming over the surrounding mountains.

The bus that waited for passengers outside of the local Catholic church.  It alerted passenger's to its departure by blaring the horn--at 4:30 a.m.  The evangelical church where we were staying was about a block away.  We sure didn't need an alarm clock!

Nicholas, the pastor of the church, and his wife Angela cooking us breakfast.  Yum!  Handmade tortillas cooked over an open fire.

Every household had a grinder to grind the corn to make the tortillas.

One of the "supermarkets" in town.  Just about all of their inventory can be seen.

My friend's bed.  She sure didn't want to move around a lot during the night!

My friend was gracious enough to let me have the one real bed in our room.  The ladies of the church gave us lots of warm blankets and we had to use them all because it got VERY cold at night.  This is me trying to stay warm one evening.

Our bathroom.  We also washed our hair with the water from the cistern.  You might see a hot water heater in the photo but don't be fooled.  It didn't work!

Our neighbor.

After the church service, we had a meal together.  This is the little boy that was sitting across from me.

 More children from the church.
