Happy New Year. My New Year began with trying to eat one grape for each stroke of midnight (and not choking while doing so) as I made a wish with each grape. This is the most common New Year's Eve tradition here in Mexico. There are many other traditions. Let's see if you have ever heard of any of these:
"El Viejo" - The Old Man. A scarecrow like figure is made that represents all the old things in 2011. Included in the scarecrow are firecrackers and other flammable material. At the stroke of midnight, the figure is burned signifying away with the old to make ready for the new.
Water - a glass of ordinary water is thrown out the front door to represent washing away all the tears from the old year.
A spoonful of cooked lentils will ensure happiness in the new year.
A broom is used to sweep away all the old and bad things in a house.
If you take your suitcase for a walk around the block, it will insure that you will travel during the new year.Depending on what part of the U.S. you are from, perhaps you have some New Year's traditions of your own.
