Children's Day

Children in Mexico have never heard the famous line given to children in the United States when they ask why there is a Mother's Day and a Father's Day but no Children's Day. The usual answer is "Every day is Children's Day." This answer is not given in Mexico where children have their own special day to be appreciated. This day is April 30 and it is a big celebration. I had the privilege and joy of being able to help at one of these celebrations in one of the Covenant churches near my house. More than 60 children from the church and neighborhood showed up for this day.

The event began with singing, followed by a short Bible story, puppets, crafts and more.

What would a Children's Day be without games? Colored disks on the floor were a novel solution to no chairs to play musical chairs.
We broke the children up into three groups. The youngest children wanted their moms to help and give them encouragement.
Everyone lined up by age and received their refreshments--delicious horchata, a rice based drink. Each boy and girl also received a "goody bag" full of treat.
Yum! The church pews served as table and chairs for the children.
Every child also received a brand new t-shirt courtesy of a nearby business. The Delfer Furniture Store provided these t-shirts. The back says "This April 30 (this store) gave me my t-shirt."
All smiles with new t-shirts, delicious refreshments and a gift bag.
It wouldn't be Mexico without an impromptu soccer game after the party.
