At one of the largest parks in Oaxaca on every Friday during Lent, there is something called "Paseos de los Viernes de Cuaresma". Young women of high school and university age arrive at the park and begin walking around the park (paseos) in one direction. The young men arrive with flowers and walk around the park in the opposite direction. The young men present a flower to their favorite young woman. The girl with the most flowers is chosen as the queen for that day.
The fourth Friday of the Lenten season is Samaritan Day. On this day, stores and restaurants make fruit flavored water and give it away free--remembering how the woman at the well gave water to Jesus as recorded in John, chapter 4. Originally the flavored water was given out in front of churches, but now stores and restaurants also give away the water.
